Robust body; pectoral fins relatively short (compared with Cheilopogon) and rounded; anal fin origin under 3rd-5th dorsal fin ray; barbels or beak never form; small size at transformation; heavily pigmented except last half of caudal peduncle unpigmented before about 5 mm and with unpigmented dorsolateral, distal, and ventrolateral areas thereafter. Notochord flexion occurs before hatching. Pigmentation: Larvae: heavily pigmented except little ventrally before about 10-11 mm and none on last 3-4 myomeres before about 5 mm; on hypural margin and lateral midline of caudal peduncle after 5 mm, midlateral stripe expands after about 8-9 mm; pectoral fin pigment initially on base only, extends onto upper part of fin after about 4 mm, reaches distal margin by about 8 mm and nearly covers fin by about 10 mm; pelvic fin pigment initially proximal, spreads distad to cover fin by about 8 mm; on dorsal fin after about 9.5-11 mm, primarily anterior; little or none on anal fin; scattered on caudal fin, primarily along lower rays.
