Africa: East coast rivers from Zambezi system south to Mkuze in northern KwaZulu-Natal; restricted to lowveld region south of Limpopo system (Ref. 7248, 52193). Considered to be closely related to or the same species as the Barotse barb, Barbus barotseensis (Ref. 7248, 52193).

Inhabits small streams and the larger river systems with or without aquatic weeds (Ref. 13337); prefers slow-flowing streams with vegetation (Ref. 7248, 52193). It forms shoals and undertakes seasonal movements up tributaries and onto floodplains (Ref. 13337).
