描述: (以 22件標本為依據): 成魚的高度: 15.0-25.0 公分。 環: 11+40.(39-41) 吻的長度: 2.1(2.0-2.3) 分之一頭長。 背鰭鰭條: 18(17-19)個覆蓋 2+1個環。 胸鰭鰭條: 18.(17-19) 冠: 高度地, 在冠之前有五個矮棘 , 與高的碟。
棘: 低的而且圓的,些微地更在較年輕的標本中發展了, 但是仍然頂端鈍
其他的顯著特性: 長的, 些微地向後指出, 圓的頰棘; 深的頭部; 狹窄的身體; 厚的體環; 突出又圓形的眼棘; 厚的吻。
彩色斑紋: 灰白的, 時常在垂直的線中有極小的白色斑點連續, 但是不一樣地均勻的顏色。
幼魚 H. kelloggi 神情非常類似 H. spinosissimus 。
Deep water species, associated with corals (Ref. 52034). Ovoviviparous (Ref. 205). The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail (Ref. 205).
