Etymology: Chiloscyllium: cheilos (Gr.), lip, referring to membranous and broad lower lip, presumably of C. plagiosum (proposed without a species); skylion, Greek for dogfish or small shark. (See ETYFish); caeruleopunctatum: caeruleus (L.), sky-blue; punctatus (L.), spotted, referring to color pattern of light-blue spots on a gray-brown background. (See ETYFish).

Western Indian Ocean: confined to Madagascar. Previously synonymized with Chiloscyllium plagiosum but after comparisons have been made, this species was tentatively recognized as valid. Not in Compagno's 1999 checklist (Ref. 35766).
