Etymology: Callogobius: Greek, kalos, kallos = beautiful + Latin, gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335);  winterbottomi: Named for Rick Winterbottom who collected the type series with Wouter Holleman..

Description synthétique Morphologie | Morphométrie

Épines dorsales (Total): 7; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total): 9; Épines anales 1; Rayons mous anaux: 8. This species is distinguished from all its congeners by the following set of characters: absence of head pores; scales in lateral series 23-26; preopercular papillae row (Row 20) is not continuous with transverse opercular papillae row (Row 21) (Ref. 93174).

Only four specimens where collected, three form the Comoros, a field station described as 'base of vertical wall with numerous caves' at 9-17 m, and one from South Africa collected at a depth of 26-28 m (Ref. 93174)..
