Etymology: Eptatretus: hepta (Gr.), seven; tretos (Gr.), perforated (i.e., with holes), referring to seven gill apertures on what would later be described as Homea banksii (=E. cirrhatus) [range within genus is 6-14 pairs of gill apertures]. (See ETYFish); goslinei: In honor of John M. Gosline (1944-2016), University of British Columbia, who “pioneered” work on the biomechanics of hagfish slime. (See ETYFish).

Description synthétique
Morphologie | Morphométrie
This species is distinguished from all congeners, except E. astrolabium, E. caribbaeus, E. carlhubbsi, E. cirrhatus, E. cryptus, E. goliath, E. laurahubbsae, E. menezesi, E. strahani, by having seven pairs of gill apertures well spaced and arranged in a near straight line; differs from these seven-gilled congeners by the number of anterior unicusps 9-12 (vs. 13-17 in E. carlhubbsi, E. laurahubbsae); total cusps 47-58 (vs. 61-71 in E. carlhubbsi, 61-68 in E. laurahubbsae); total pores 65-72 (vs. 83-84 in E. astrolabium, 79-85 in E. caribbeaus, 93-110 in E. carlhubbsi, 82-91 in E. cirrhatus, 78-86 in E. cryptus, 89-95 in E. goliath, 97-105 in E. laurahubbsae, 86-94 in E. menezesi, 76-86 in E. strahani); and by having two bilaterally symmetrical nasal-sinus papillae (vs. absence of nasal sinus papillae in E. astrolabium, E. caribbeaus) (Ref. 123790).
