Type locality, off Twofold Bay, New South Wales, BMNH 1879.5.14.417 (holotype of Raja nitida, 21.0 cm TL, immature male) (Ref. 76878). Occurs in southeastern Australia, including Tasmania, north to at least Newcastle in New South Wales and west to Eyre (Ref. 6871). Abundant on the continental shelf of southern Australia (Ref. 6871).
