Known from Western and Southern Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland (Ref. 48666). Feral populations recorded from reservoirs in Brisbane area (Qld) (Ref. 44894, 48900) and from freshwater and tidal creeks around Townsville (Ref. 44894, 48900) and Cairns (Qld) (Ref. 44894), in the latter possibly an interspecific cross with O. niloticus (Ref. 48900). Established on the Atherton Tablelands (Qld) in the Barron (including Lake Tinaroo) and North Johnstone rivers and Western Australia in the Gascoyne-Lyons river system (Ref. 44894).
