||The organization exists for the promotion of co-operation, unity and solidarity, territorial integrity, awareness of international obligations, harmonization of foreign policy and economic integration within and among its members.
||The OECS superseded the West Indies Associated States, founded in 1966 as a political decision-making body, and the East Caribbean Common Market (ECCM), founded in 1968 as an associate institution of the Caribbean Community (Caricom).
