Ecology
Marine; bathypelagic; oceanodromous (Ref. 51243); depth range 0 - 4740 m (Ref. 58018), usually 500 - ? m (Ref. 6601). Deep-water
Atlantic, Indian and Pacific: in tropical and subtropical waters. Absent in the Mediterranean and eastern tropical Pacific. Widespread throughout the Eastern Central Atlantic but recorded mainly between 30°N to 15°N; unknown from the Gulf of Guinea.

Oceanic, mesopelagic or bathypelagic species (Ref. 6601, 58302). Most adults have been taken in hauls to depths considerably in excess of 500 m (Ref. 10755). Adults prey on other midwater fishes (Ref. 6691).
