Etymology: Sciaenochromis: Greek, skiaina, skion = a fish, red mullet + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); ahli: Named after Dr. Ernst Ahl, Zoological Museum of the Humboldt University, Berlin who described this species as H. serranoides (Ref. 40899).
