Eponymy: H Niwa was the Director of the Fishery Experiment Station of Kōchi Prefecture at Susaki, Shikoku, Japan. A number of the fish that the authors described were collected from the experimental station thanks to its Director. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

This species has the following characters: scales below lateral line to anal fin origin 12-16; upper jaw length 13.2-14.6% SL; pectoral fin short 22.3-27.7% SL. Lengths in SL 6.85-12.78 cm (Ref. 127477).
Cross section: compressed.
Caught in fairly deep water. Found in sandy-muddy bottoms of coastal deep waters (Ref. 41299).
