Marine; benthopelagic; depth range 0 - 148 m (Ref. 50550). Temperate
North Pacific: Niigata and Iwate Prefecture, Japan to Primorskii Krai, Sakhalin and the Commander Islands, Russia. Also recorded from the Bering Sea to the Aleutian Islands (Ref. 265). Reported from South Korea (Ref. 77001).

Dorsal spines (total): 80 - 96; Anal spines: 2 - 3; Anal soft rays: 40 - 51; Vertebrae: 87 - 101. One pore on interorbital region; pelvic fin present; a narrow silvery longitudinal band runs from eye to base of pectoral fin; body color greatly variable, with brown, green, light-purple etc (Ref. 559).
Body shape (shape guide): eel-like.
Lives in seaweed areas of the intertidal zone (Ref. 559).
