Etymology: Plesiops: Greek, plesios = near + Greek, ops = appearance (Ref. 45335); polydactylus: Specific name from the Greek words 'polys' meaning many and 'daktylos' meaning finger, referring to the high number of pectoral fin rays that characterize this species.

Western Pacific: Naviti Island, Fiji. Recently recorded from Tonga (Ref. 53797).

Specimens collected at an unusually deep site for most Plesiops species, at 17 and 25-30 m (Ref. 27772). Eggs are guarded by the male parent (Ref. 205).
