Etymology: Trimma: Greek, trimma, -atos = something crushed (Ref. 45335); sostra: Specific name derived from Sostratus, the Cnidian designer and builder of the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Noun in apposition. More on author: Winterbottom.
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Marine; demersal; depth range 0 - 40 m (Ref. 52975). Tropical
Western Pacific: Caroline Is., Fiji, Kiribati Republic, Marshall Is., Solomon Is., and Ponape.
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 2.4 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 52975)
soft rays: 8 - 9. Diagnosis: Seven large regular orange red bars along the side of the body; a dark spot on the lower base of the pectoral fin, and another on the lower peduncle; internal pigmentation on the dorsal surface of the head just behind eyes well-developed but broadly diffused, not forming a discreet bar. Predorsal scales absent. Second dorsal spine slightly to very elongate. A moderate interorbital and variably-developed postorbital trench. The fifth pelvic fin ray is unbranched and 50-70% of the length of the fourth.
Inhabits coral reefs in 0-40 m (Ref. 90102).
