Etymology: Photonectes: Greek, photos = light + Greek, nekton = swimmer (Ref. 45335); gorodinskii: Named for Andrei Aleksandrovich Gorodinskii, a friend of the author, a naturalist and an explorer.
Eponymy: Andre Aleksandrovich Gorodinski is an amateur lepidopterist, coleopterist, entomologist, insect collector and explorer who is a friend of the author. A number of insects are also named after him. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 20; Anal soft rays: 21; Vertebrae: 54. This species of the subgenus Trachinostomias is distinguished by the following characters: vertebrae 53-54; pectoral fin with 2 rays, connected at the base with a membrane; teeth uniformly sized; mental barbel of simple structure with a pigmented stem and a weakly expressed terminal bulb, barely wider than the stem, without any appendages (Ref. 125184).
