Etymology: Kentrocapros: Greek, kentron = sting + Greek, kapros = goat (Ref. 45335); flavimaculatus: Name from Latin 'flavimaculatus', 'flavi' for yellow and 'macula' for spot, referring to the many yellow spots on the body.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 10; Anal soft rays: 9. This species is distinguished by the following: lateral sides of the body with many yellow spots; a distinct spine on the middle of each dorsolateral ridge of the carapace; without spines on the lateral and ventrolateral ridges of the carapace; gill opening located below the posterior half of the eye (Ref. 131241).
