Etymology: Chiloglanis: Greek, cheilos = lip + Greek, glanis = a fish that can eat the bait without touching the hook; a cat fish (Ref. 45335); compactus: Name 'compactus' from the English word compact, in reference to the short and rotund body shape of this species as well as it being the smallest of all the currently known congeners in southern Africa.
