Actinopteri (ray-finned fishes) > Anguilliformes
(Eels and morays) > Chlopsidae
Etymology: Kaupichthys: Because of Johann Jakob Kaup, 1827; author of "Zoologische Monographien", ichthyologist + Greek, ichthys = fish. More on author: Schultz.
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Marine; reef-associated; depth range 0 - 56 m (Ref. 37816). Tropical
Indo-Pacific. Recent authors have regarded Kaupichthys hyoproroides (Strömman), described from the Atlantic, as a circumtropical species; however, Kenneth A. Tighe, who is revising family Chlopsidae, will recognize the Indo-Pacific Kaupichthys diodontus as distinct from Kaupichthys hyoproroides (Ref. 10685).
