Etymology: Labeo: Latin, labeo = one who has large lips (Ref. 45335);  kirkii: Named after M.J. Kirk who collected the specimen on which Boulenger based the original description of the species (Ref. 26192).

Espinas dorsales (total): 3; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 10-14; Espinas anales 3; Radios blandos anales: 5; Vértebra: 31 - 33. Diagnosis: Large lips plicate; dorsal fin concave with 10 branched rays; eyes in superolateral position; genital orifice far from the origin of the anal fin; snout largely pointed and very prominent with a deep transverse furrow and a fleshy appendix at the end; dark lateral brown band on the flanks (Ref. 26192).
