পৃষ্ঠীয় কাঁটা (মোট ): 2 - 3; পৃষ্ঠীয় নরম পাখনা দন্ড (মোট ): 7-8; পায়ূ কাঁটা 3; পায়ূর নরম পাখনা্তুন্ড: 11 - 14. Compressed body, dorsal fin inserted behind the origin of pelvic fins. Mouth subterminal, lower jaw at an angle of 25-40° to the horizontal. Pharyngeal teeth 5-5. Silvery body with a dark lateral band.

Found in ponds and slow-moving rivers in very dense populations.
