Ecology
Marine; brackish; reef-associated; depth range 0 - 33 m (Ref. 26938), usually 0 - 1 m (Ref. 26938). Tropical; 41°N - 24°S
Western Atlantic: Bermuda, New Jersey and northern Gulf of Mexico in USA to southeastern Brazil; absent from Bahamas. Eastern Central Pacific: coastal lagoons and tidal flats of Sonora, Sinaloa and Nayarit, Mexico (Ref. 27659).

About 6 faint lines radiate from eye. 2 widely separated patches of papillae in central part of sucking disk (Ref. 26938).
Body shape (shape guide): elongated.
Facultative air-breathing in the genus (Ref. 126274); Inhabits grassy and rocky shallow areas and around pilings. Has been reared in captivity (Ref. 35420). Usually found in water <1m deep but sometimes to depths of 33 m (Ref. 26938).
