Etymology: Chrosomus: Chrosomus meaning color (Ref. 1998);  tennesseensis: tennesseensis, of Tennessee (referring to the Tennessee River drainage) (Ref. 10294).

Chrosomus tennesseensis is similar to C. oreas but can be distinguished by having smaller spots (smaller than eye pupil) on back and upper side, usually a thin black stripe present along side (above larger broken stripe), red on caudal fin and below stripe along side of large make, and 67-95 scales on lateral line (Ref. 86798).
