This species inhabits a karstic warm spring, Media Luna, which exists because of a tectonic ridge forming a hill southwest (SW) of El Jabalí. This spring formerly emptied into Rio Viejo, which has been blocked and diverted for agricultural purposes. It is sympatric with H. bartoni and H.
cf carpintis which was translocated into the Media Luna system (Ref. 94458). Aquarium conditions: pH=7, H=3, 25°C water temperature, omnivore, egg layer, needs plant and rock cover, not easy to raise in captivity.
