Marine; reef-associated; depth range 15 - 200 m (Ref. 9770), usually 50 - 200 m (Ref. 9770). Tropical; 33°N - 24°S
Indo-West Pacific: Angela Islands eastward through Indonesia to the Galapagos Islands, north to southern Japan.

Occurs in deep seaward reefs. One collection outside Micronesia was made at 15 m (Ref. 1602). Benthopelagic (Ref. 58302). Feeds on zooplanktons (Ref. 89972). Exhibits sexual dimorphism (Ref. 37816). Taken occasionally by bottom fishing (Ref. 1602). Marketed fresh.
