Dorsal soft rays (total): 31 - 35; Anal soft rays: 20 - 22; Vertebrae: 36 - 39. This species is distinguished by the following characters: vertebrae 14-16 + 22-24 = 36-39;
dorsal-fin rays 31-35; anal-fin rays 20-22; further distinguished from all congeners, except P. paucus and P. pietschi>, by having laterally flattened, bladelike ventral procurrent caudal rays, and an anteriorly directed hook-like process on the third posteriormost ventral procurrent caudal ray (Ref. 94277).
