North and central America: USA in Atlantic and Gulf slopes (mostly near coast) from Massachusetts to Rio Grande drainage in Texas and southeast New Mexico; north in Mississippi River and major tributaries (mainly Arkansas and Red rivers) to south Indiana and east Oklahoma; also Mexico.
