Etymology: Valenciennea: From Achille Valenciennes 1794-1865; he worked with Duméril, Cuvier and Lacepède since 1815; malacologist, author of a "Histoire naturelle des poissons" (Ref. 45335);  yanoi: Named for Mr. Korechika Yano, who first discovered the new species and photographed it underwater; noun in the genitive case..

Taggstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt): 7; Mjukstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt): 12; Taggstrålar i analfenan 1; Mjukstrålar i analfenan: 12. This species is distinguished by the following characters: low rounded first dorsal fin, no black spot on dorsal fin, D2 12; A 12; caudal-fin rounded with a slight extension of the 4th ray; snout without a black spot and yellow stripe; upper part of eye without a black spot; lateral side of head with three narrow vivid sky-blue stripes; body with two broad orange and yellow stripes reaching to rear margin of caudal fin (Ref. 123074).
