Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal soft rays: 9; Vertebrae: 26. This species is determined by the following set of characters: D: VI-I,9; A: I,9; P 17; with 55-56 lateral scales; 14 transverse scales; scales are cycloid except in the caudal peduncle and base of the caudal fin where scales are ctenoid; gill opening extending slightly forward of the level of posterior margin of preopercle; first dorsal fin has elongated filaments on second to fourth spines; oval-shaped caudal fin, about equal to head length, 3.5 in SL; cephalic sensory system includes pores B’, C, D, E, F, G, H, M’, N, and O’. Live colouration is grey to grey-brown with 3-4 large diffuse, side of body with dark blotches interspersed with large, irregular white blotches, and diagonal orange bands anteroventrally on the side, grading to diagonal rows of small orange spots on posterior half of body; numerous orange spots and short bands on the head; orange spots in the rear portion of the first dorsal fin and entire second dorsal and caudal fins (Ref. 123124).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Occurs mainly on steady sloping, sandy-rubble seafloor which is exposed to moderate to strong currents (Ref. 123124).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = No PD50 data   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.00708 (0.00333 - 0.01504), b=3.09 (2.92 - 3.26), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this (Sub)family-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  3.2   ±0.3 se; based on size and trophs of closest relatives
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  High, minimum population doubling time less than 15 months (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (10 of 100).
