Etymology: Gigantactis: Greek, 'gigas' or 'gigantos' = gigantic + Greek, 'aktis' = ray (referring to the unusually long first dorsal-fin spine that functions as a lure in this genus) (Ref. 86949);  cheni: Named for Mr. Din-Moo Chen, who is an excellent fisherman and who collected most samples, including the type series of both the new species in this reference..

Rückenflossenweichstrahlen (insgesamt): 6; Afterflossenweichstrahlen: 6. This species which is a member of the Gigantactis vanhoeffeni species group differs from its congeners in having a single row of 8-15 unpigmented filaments on the posterior margin of basal one-third of illicium; illicial length 145.5-172.1% SL; esca is elongated, tapering into a conical shape, with numerous spinules, darkly pigmented; distal prolongation length 10.6-12.6% SL; dentary teeth 66-70 on each side, in 5 longitudinal series; dentary teeth relative long, 2.5-3.4% SL; caudal fin rays are short, 25.5-30.6% SL; caudal fin deeply forked (Ref. 122006).
