Etymology: hafezi: Named for Khwāja Shamsud-Dīn Muhammad Hāfez-e Shīrāzī (Persian), known by his pen name Hāfez, one of the most famous and influential Persian lyric poets.

This species is distinguished from the other two congeners by the following characters: body completely naked; more posterior position of the anus, which is closer to the anal-fin origin than to the pelvic-fin origin (distance from anus to anal-fin origin 0.2-0.4 times in distance from pelvic-fin origin to anal-fin origin); color pattern mottled or prominent irregular dark brown or black midlateral stripe disconnected from blotches and saddles on back; and caudal fin slightly emarginated (Ref. 95092).
