The collection sites have clear and tannin-stained water. The typical habitats were composed of muddy substrate, with only one site consisting of submerged aquatic vegetation (Barclaya sp.) . Undisturbed habitats were partially covered by forest canopy, whereas disturbed sites were exposed to sunlight. Occurs together with Melanotaenia goldiei, Melanotaenia rubrostriata, Pseudomugil sp., and Ambassis agrammus. Prefers shallow (10-20 cm depth) areas usually covered with floating grass.
