Freshwater; benthopelagic. Tropical; 11°S - 21°S
Africa: upper Zambezi system and Kafue River (Ref. 2801), as well as the Cunene and Okavango systems (Ref. 120641). Also collected from the Kasai (middle Congo River basin) in Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ref. 12818), but identification needs to be verified (Ref. 120641). The taxonomic status of this species is uncertain (Ref. 7248).

Common in riverine and floodplain habitats, frequently in association with the striped robber (Brycinus lateralis). Feeds on insects and small organisms. Used as bait for tigerfish (Ref. 7248).
