Etymology: Nandus: 'Nandus' is a Bengali local name, but it lacks a proper reference; ‘nanda’ is a Bengali fish name but probably for a different species (J. Müller, pers. comm., April 2021, after information from native speakers).

Spine dorsali (totale): 12 - 14; Raggi dorsali molli (totale): 9-11; Spine anali 3; Raggi anali molli: 5 - 6; Vertebre: 24 - 25. Distinguished from all other species of Nandus by its deep dorsal head profile and sharp snout, the presence of 37-42 lateral line scales interrupted at the 24th-27th lateral line scale and the presence of relatively large serrae on the preopercle.
Usually found in swamps and sluggish waters (Ref. 43281).
