Etymology: Canthigaster: Greek, kanthos = the outer or inner corner of the eye, where the lids meet, 1646 + Greek, gaster = stomach (Ref. 45335);  jamestyleri: Named for James C. Tyler, for his help and advice to the authors, as well as for his many contributions to the study of the systematics of plectognath fishes (Ref. 43205).

Absence of dark dorsal and ventral margins on the caudal fin and the presence of a small irregular dark spot on the dorsal fin base; presence of bars on the caudal fin; presence of diagonally oriented lines on the snout, and presence of two darker longitudinal stripes on the sides of its body (Ref. 43205).
