Etymology: Tropheus: Greek, tropaion = defeat, a memorial of a fighting war, trophy; because of their specialized teeth were such an obvious feeding adaptation (Ref. 45335).

Rock-grazer; occurs over rock, which are either anchored and part of the hard core of the coast, interlocking rubble, or even sandstone slabs lining a sand beach but not loose pebbles rolling about in the surf and silted-over habitats (Ref. 6770). Restricted to the upper rocky habitat; algae browser; forages in schools; maternal mouthbrooder (Ref. 46829).
