Found only in rocky shores. Inhabits mainly steeply sloping large boulder shores but is also found on gently sloping shores if the boulder size is large enough to provide interstices. Adults forage in shoals, mixed with other species. Omnivorous, feeding on algae, Bryozoans, insect larvae, plankton, prawns and juvenile fishes (Ref. 27668).

Mouth brooder with maternal parental care. Male defends territories at depths between less than 1 and 4 m. Brooding female guards small territories around a cave between rock boulders.
