Etymology: Knodus: Greek, knodon, -ontos = knife, sword (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Edgar A Smith (d: 1953) collected the holotypes of these fish. He was a member of the Madeira-Mamoré expedition (1907–1912), which was commissioned by the Brazilian Government to build a railway along the banks of the Rio Madeira. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
