Etymology: Pterocryptis: Greek, pteron = wing, fin + Greek, kryptos = hidden (Ref. 45335);  buccata: Specific name from the Latin bucca, meaning cheek, in allusion to the prominent mandibular muscles causing the cheeks to appear inflated..

Rückenflossenweichstrahlen (insgesamt): 4; Afterflossenweichstrahlen: 54 - 61; Wirbelzahl: 50 - 52. Prominent mandibular muscles causing the cheeks to appear inflated; 4 mandibular barbels and vomerine teeth present in 2 separate patches.
