Etymology: Lamiopsis: Etymology not explained nor evident, perhaps Gill thought L. temminckii resembled (-opsis, Greek for appearance) members of the family Lamnidae (Lamia = Lamna). (See ETYFish); tephrodes: -oides, Greek suffix meaning like, resembling, having the form of: tephritis (L.), an ash-colored precious stone, referring to its “more or less uniform gray” coloration in alcohol.
