Espinas dorsales (total): 8; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 9; Espinas anales 2; Radios blandos anales: 8. This species is distinguished by the following characters: brownish-red irregular spots on body; usually 9 pored lateral-line scales; alternating markings on second dorsal, anal and caudal fins; juveniles and young individuals with three regular bars on body (Ref. 97601).
